This session will address the nature and function of academic background knowledge relative to student academic achievement. The presenter will make the case that academic background knowledge is one of the most important variables typically associated with students' experiences outside of school that is amenable to enhancement via schoolwide interventions. A specific schoolwide approach involving direct instruction in academic vocabulary and wide reading will be described.
