Instructional leaders have long been advocates for maintaining a balanced curriculum in which each child has significant learning activities every year in science, social studies, basic skills, the arts, and health and physical education. The strong emphasis placed on the basic skill testing requirement of NCLB legislation has resulted in a situation where many children spend most or all of the day on reading and math. This session will document growing evidence of a serious imbalance and suggest what teachers and other leaders must do to counteract this dangerous trend.
